Common conditions impacting the heads, eyes, ears, noses and throats of NICU babies
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
ROP is an abnormal growth of blood vessels in the eye which can lead to bleeding and scarring that can cause damage to the retina. This can cause long term issues and may result in vision loss. This most often occurs in babies born before 30 weeks. An ophthalmologist (eye doctor) will examine the baby’s eyes for signs of ROP. Most mild cases heal without treatment, and will result in little to no vision loss. In severe cases, the ophthalmologist may have to perform laser therapy to eliminate further scarring.
Choanal Atresia
Choanal atresia is the narrowing or blockage of the nasal passageway which causes difficulty breathing in your baby. The blockage is due to tissue or bone in the nasal airway that was present at birth. Surgery can address the problem and ease uncomfortable symptoms and following surgery your baby will typically need stent left in the nose to hold the nares open.
Thrush
Thrush is a fungus infection of the mouth characterized by white patches on the tongue which is typically red or bright red. It is normally treated with an oral antifungal!
